The sanitary equipment market offers a wide range of water meters: from the most common to electronic models. There are also those that only activate when the water in the pipe reaches 30 degrees Celsius, allowing residents to save on hot water bills.
Regarding meter installation, all models are more or less similar, regardless of their type.
Meter Installation
What do you need for meter installation? Firstly, after purchasing the meter, you'll also need to get a sediment filter and a ball valve, if the latter isn't already on the riser pipe.
Next, you need to choose the meter's installation location. According to regulations, the device must be situated as close as possible to the water supply network to prevent any illegal connections that bypass the meter.
The next step is the installation itself. First, a ball valve is attached to the pipe end using pipe sealant or PTFE tape, followed by the water filter. Ensure the filter cap faces downwards, in the direction of water flow. A union nut is then attached to the filter. It's best to connect the filter and nut first, and only then attach them to the riser pipe. Now the meter can be connected.
When buying a meter, it's advisable to choose a device with a rotatable display. This allows for convenient reading without having to kneel.
- Ball valve before the meter
- Sediment filter in the direction of flow, cap downwards
- Meter arrows aligned with water flow
- Check valve, if required by the water utility company
Verification and Sealing
Regarding meter verification, before installation, it should be taken to the water utility company, where the verification is carried out. As a result of verification, a certificate of conformity for the meter is issued.
The device can then be installed, and a specialist from the same water utility company should be called out to seal the meter and check that the installation complies with regulations. Generally, meter readings are not accepted for billing without a seal.
The verification period is typically five years. Once the deadline passes, the meter must either be re-verified or replaced with a new one – in practice, installing a new meter is often cheaper than re-verifying an old one.
ToruFix Assistance with Water Meters
We perform water meter installation, replacement, and water meter unit construction in flats, private homes, and apartment building basements. If necessary, we arrange sealing and documentation with the water utility company.
If you notice an unexpected increase in your water bill, it's worth checking for leaks and the meter's operation first: a spinning dial with all taps closed almost always indicates a hidden leak.
