Unlike a gurgling or bubbling sound, which usually indicates air in the heating system (we cover this in more detail in our article on bleeding radiators), rattling and creaking typically signify mechanical friction or pressure changes within the system.

Gurgling, Creaking, and Rattling — What does each sound mean?
Before attempting a repair, it's worth accurately identifying the exact sound your radiator is making, as different noises indicate different problems.
- Gurgling or bubbling sound — most often air in the heating system or radiator; the solution is bleeding.
- Creaking or clicking sound — thermal expansion of metal rubbing against fixings, pipe penetrations, or the floor.
- Rattling or knocking sound — larger mechanical movement, such as a loose mounting bracket, incorrect valve installation direction, or water hammer in the system.
- Whistling or hissing sound — typically excessive flow rate through the thermostatic valve or high pump pressure.

Thermal Expansion of Metal and Friction Against Fixings
The most common cause of creaking and clicking is a completely natural physical phenomenon – as the radiator and heating pipes heat up with warm water, they expand, and as the water cools, they contract.
This lengthening and shortening is usually only a few millimetres, but if the pipe or radiator is fixed too tightly against a wall, floor, or bracket, friction occurs, which is heard as creaking or clicking.
Where does friction typically occur?
Most often, friction occurs where the pipe passes through the floor, wall, or furniture, as well as at the radiator mounting brackets and wall consoles, if they have loosened over time or were initially installed too tightly.
Incorrectly Installed or Loose Fixings
Radiators are usually mounted to the wall using brackets or feet. If the fixings have loosened over time, the radiator can move slightly as it heats and cools, producing a knocking or rattling sound.
Problems can also arise if the radiator was initially installed incorrectly – for example, too tightly against the wall without a gap for expansion, or if the mounting brackets are not strong enough to support the radiator's weight.
- Check that all mounting screws and surfaces are securely tightened.
- Verify that there is an even gap between the radiator and the wall along its entire length.
- If the radiator wobbles when gently moved by hand, the fixing is likely the source of the problem.
Thermostatic Radiator Valve Hissing and Incorrect Installation Direction
The thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) regulates the amount of water flowing into the radiator. If the valve is installed incorrectly – for example, against the direction of flow – it can produce a hissing or whistling sound, as water flows unevenly through the valve, creating turbulence.
Most thermostatic valves have an arrow on their body indicating the correct flow direction. If this was ignored during installation, the valve may also not regulate temperature correctly.
What can you check yourself?
Look for the arrow on the valve body and ensure that water flows through the valve in that direction. If the arrow points in the opposite direction to the pipe, the valve is likely installed incorrectly and requires a specialist to re-install it.
Excessive Pressure Difference and Circulation Pump Speed
If the circulation pump operates at too high a speed, or if there's too large a pressure difference between different sections of the system, water moves through the pipes and valves faster than necessary, creating a whistling, hissing, or knocking sound.
This is a particularly common issue in apartment blocks where the central heating system supplies multiple flats, and pump settings are not correctly balanced.
- Frequent whistling or hissing in several radiators simultaneously suggests a pump speed issue, not a problem with a single radiator.
- In an apartment block, it's advisable to inform the building manager, as pump settings can only be adjusted at the system level.
- In a private house, you can usually reduce the pump speed yourself if the pump allows it, or have a specialist balance the system.
Dirt and Sludge in the Radiator
Over time, rust, limescale, and sediment accumulate in the heating system water, settling in the bottom of the radiator and creating a muffled, rumbling, or crunching sound as water flows through it.
A sludgy radiator is also typically colder at the bottom than at the top – an additional sign that helps distinguish this problem from air or mechanical friction.
Water Hammer in the Heating System
Water hammer occurs when the flow of water in the pipework suddenly stops – for example, when a valve closes too quickly or a pump abruptly switches on or off. This creates a sudden pressure wave, heard as a loud bang or thud in the pipework.
Water hammer is stronger and sharper than typical creaking and can, over time, damage pipe connections if the problem is not resolved. If you hear a loud bang, rather than a soft clicking, it's likely water hammer, and you should call a specialist.

How to prevent noise and problems in the future?
A large proportion of radiator noises are preventable if the heating system is regularly maintained and installed correctly from the outset.
- Have the heating system installed and commissioned by an experienced specialist who adheres to correct spacing and valve orientation.
- Flush the heating system periodically to prevent the accumulation of sediment and dirt.
- Bleed radiators at the start of the heating season to avoid air-induced noises.
- Check fixings a couple of times during the heating season, especially in older radiators.
- Insulate heating pipes where they pass through cold rooms – this also reduces temperature fluctuations and consequent expansion.
How does radiator material affect the nature of the sound?

- Cast iron radiators — thick-walled and heavy construction, so expansion is slower, but the resulting sound is usually a lower, duller click.

Old and New Heating Systems – Do Noise Causes Differ?
The age of the house and heating system influences which noise problem is more likely, so it's worth considering the age of both the pipework and the radiators themselves when diagnosing.
Old systems (Soviet-era apartment blocks, old private houses)
In these systems, common problems include sediment build-up, rusted fixings, and incorrectly estimated expansion gaps from the outset, as modern commissioning requirements may not have been applied in the same way during installation. Old cast iron radiators may also have accumulated sediment over decades, causing a muffled, rumbling sound.
New systems and renovated flats
In new or recently renovated systems, noise more often arises from installation errors – such as an incorrect valve flow direction, a pipe fixed too tightly, or an unbalanced pump. In such cases, it's more of an installation problem than one of age or wear, so it's worth considering recalling the installer under warranty if it's still valid.
Why does noise occur more frequently at the start and end of the heating season?
Many radiator sounds appear precisely when the heating system is switched on for the first time in autumn or turned off in spring – this is no coincidence, but related to abrupt temperature changes.
If the system has been cold for a long time over summer and then hot water suddenly reaches the radiators and pipes, the temperature difference is greater than in the middle of the heating season when the system maintains a relatively stable temperature. A larger temperature difference means greater and faster expansion, which in turn causes more friction and thus more audible clicking or creaking.
Common Installation Errors That Cause Later Noise
Some noise problems could be completely avoided if installation is done carefully and following correct principles from the outset.
- Pipe fixed directly to the floor or wall without an expansion gap or soft intermediary material.
- Radiator installed too tightly against the wall, without sufficient air gap for thermal expansion.
- Thermostatic valve installed with incorrect flow direction, causing constant hissing.
- Mounting brackets chosen too weak for the radiator's weight, causing them to loosen over time.
- Pump speed set too high during installation, without considering the specific building's actual needs.
- System not flushed before commissioning, causing construction dust and debris to reach radiators and later produce muffled, rumbling sounds.
How to pinpoint the cause of the noise yourself more accurately?
Before calling a specialist, it's worth gathering as much information as possible about the nature and occurrence of the sound – this will speed up diagnosis later and help avoid unnecessary inspections.
- When does the sound occur – when the heating switches on, switches off, or constantly during operation?
- Does the sound come from one specific radiator, or is it heard in several places simultaneously?
- Does the intensity of the sound change when you turn the thermostat up or down?
- Is the sound accompanied by vibrations that you feel when touching the radiator?
- Has the sound always been present or did it only appear recently – for example, after renovation, valve replacement, or a long summer shutdown?
Why is this information important for a specialist?

Worn or Incorrectly Sized Valve Body
In addition to incorrect flow direction, noise can also be caused by a worn valve body whose internal components (piston, spring, seal) have worn over time and no longer close precisely. Such a valve can produce a vibrating or trembling sound, especially when water flow is low and pressure is uneven.
Problems can also arise from an incorrectly sized or rated valve that is too large or too small for the radiator's actual output – in such cases, turbulence and hissing will occur even with the correct flow direction.
Can a valve be replaced without draining the entire system?
In modern systems, there are usually isolating valves that allow an individual radiator valve to be replaced without draining the entire heating system. In older systems, however, this may require draining at least that branch, so it's advisable to entrust this job to a specialist who will assess the situation before starting the replacement.
Pipe Support Spacing and Long Straight Sections
A long straight section of pipe without intermediate support points will expand and contract more overall than a short, well-supported section, which increases the extent of friction and thus the loudness of the audible sound. If the spacing between supports was too wide during initial installation, the pipe might even sag slightly when heated, which further adds a low vibrating tone to the sound.
To solve the problem, intermediate support points are added, or sliding mounting clips are used, which allow longitudinal movement of the pipe without direct friction between the metal or the fixing.
- For long pipe sections (over a couple of metres), check if there are enough intermediate support points.
- If necessary, use movable or sliding clamps that do not rigidly fix the pipe in place.
- If the pipe is visibly sagging, it's likely a support issue, not just a noise problem.
- During renovation, it's worth reviewing the spacing between supports with a specialist, especially if the existing system has previously made noise, to prevent the same problem from recurring under new finishes.
