The goal is to understand whether the problem is limited to your toilet, your flat's plumbing system as a whole, or affects the entire stack.

Safe First Steps to Try Yourself

Some cases can be resolved without calling a specialist, especially if the problem is located in the toilet's trap itself. It's important to be cautious and avoid using aggressive methods that could damage the porcelain.

  • Use a rubber plunger – place it over the drain opening and make several calm, consistent pulls, not thrusts.
  • If you have a toilet auger (spiral pipe cable), you can carefully reach the first metre of obstruction in the trap with it.
  • Do not pour a full bucket of water at once if the level is already high – this only increases the risk of water overflowing onto the floor.
  • Do not use corrosive chemical cleaners in a porcelain toilet – they usually don't dissolve fibres or objects and can damage seals and glaze.
  • If your cistern has two flush buttons, try using the smaller volume for a while to reduce the load on the narrowed pipe.

When to Stop and Not Continue

If the plunger doesn't yield results after three or four attempts, if the water starts rising even before flushing, or if the problem recurs multiple times on the same day, it's wise to stop. How to Prevent Recurring Water Level Rises

Most causes of this symptom develop slowly, so regular prevention can avert the majority of problems before they escalate into complete blockages.

  • Only flush toilet paper and natural waste down the toilet – wet wipes, hygiene products, and grease belong in the bin.
